The much-awaited Jack In The Box restaurant is coming to Kona, Hawaii. After being sent through the coconut wireless word of the coming restaurant spread fast. We have all driven by Henry Street, seen the construction, and wondered when it will open. The official word is that construction began on March 15, 2010 and they expect to be open for business at the end of September of 2010.
Who does not love their food including the tacos, sourdough jack hamburger, egg rolls, or their teriyaki bowls? The first Jack In The Box opened in 1951. It is currently one of the largest chain restaurants in America. With over 2,200 restaurants that are located in 18 different states. This will be the second Jack in the Box on the Big Island, although there are 25 total locations in Hawaii.
Reddy Development is building the Kona project. As VP of Construction Management, John McCauley said, “from out of the rumble of rock will come a Jack in the Box”. He also reports that manager Mark Racine of HHB & Associates, LLC established in 1994 is in charge of the construction project.
Some of the local sub-contactors working on the project include P.A. Harris Electric, Calvin’s Plumbing, and Custom Air who is doing the air conditioning. Preferred Digital Prints is supplying the printing of the construction plans. The building designer is local architect, Terry Dunlap of Kona Home and Land, located in Captain Cook on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Chris Scanlan, president and CEO of Scanlan Management, is the franchise operator for this location. Chris owns and operates all Jack in the Box restaurants in Hawaii except the location in Hilo. Chris is a longtime resident of Hawaii and has extensive experience in the restaurant industry.
When asked if there was anything special about the Kona franchise or its operator, Brian Luscomb, from the corporate office of Jack in the box said; “We think this will be a great location for us. Jack in the Box is a very popular brand, and this location will feature our most contemporary restaurant design. Amenities will include ceramic tile floors, decorative pendant lighting, graphic wall hangings and a mix of seating styles, including booths and high-top tables.”

Although many areas of the US have been experiencing very little or no activity, Hawaii's construction industry is still showing signs of life. An example is the $50 million dollar West Hawaii Civic Center being built by Maryl Construction for Hawaii County. The Civic Center is is on schedule for completion in January 2011 and is part of the 80 acre Honokohau Village development. Most county departments and services will be moved to the new civic center when it is completed.

A great new restaurant has come to town. Humpy’s Big Island Alehouse has moved into the former Hard Rock Café building in the Coconut Grove Marketplace on Alii Drive in Kailua Kona.
The building had been vacant since July 2008 and recently underwent renovations that started the first week in October 2009 in preparation for the restaurant’s grand opening in early August 2010 according to Jeff Foster, Director of Operations.
“The renovation project was performed by Franz Contracting, Inc. and was completed in two phases” said Foster. The first phase to be completed before the opening included a new bar area at the front of the restaurant on the ground floor, renovated bar area on the second floor, new interior finishes and furnishings throughout the restaurant and all new kitchen equipment. The second phase to be completed in mid 2010 was the addition of an outdoor seating area fronting Alii Drive and the volleyball court where food and liquor will be served.
Design and permitting were provided by Piper Designs, mechanical engineering by Mark Morrison and electrical engineering by John Maute.
Subcontractors on the project according to Bob Ranfranz of Franz Contacting include plumbing by Clem’s Plumbing, electrical by Steve Tanaka of Tanaka & Sons Electric, air conditioning and refrigeration by Hualalai Mechanical, floor coverings by RepTile and painting, staining & refinishing by Lyle Kapaun Painting.
The original, Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse is in Anchorage, Alaska and their new Kona location employs about 65 local residents. The new restaurant features live music at least 4 nights per week. The menu includes many of their signature dishes that can be viewed at http://www.humpys.com/
